Match report

La Gloria de Boedo took a hard-earned victory against Club de Villa Crespo Este at Boedo pitch, in a match that confirmed what both sides brought to matchday eighteen in Primera L de GBA Oeste: two well-organised, defensive teams, with not too many attacking ambitions. The final 1-0 sums up neatly what happened over the ninety minutes: a tight match where space was at a premium and, when they came, the finishing touches made the difference. La Gloria played at home in their balanced 4-4-2 and managed to break a deadlock that seemed destined to last until the end.

Ramón Tévez was the heartbeat of La Gloria’s midfield, as he has been at thirty-one. The Uruguayan central midfielder, with a 7.7 rating, set the game in order when Villa Crespo Este looked to push forward. On the left, Bastian Brignoli brought a hard-working mentality, though he was booked during the game. Chino Negrete, the veteran full-back of thirty-seven who arrived at La Gloria from Bahía Blanca more than two decades ago, was decisive on his flank: not only did he defend, he also carried danger down his side. It was precisely from that area that the match-winning goal came. Negrete swung in a cross from the left that found his teammates in the box, and although the move is not detailed minute by minute, it was the only time La Gloria managed to breach Villa Crespo Este’s organisation, as their own balanced 4-4-2 tried to hold firm but lacked the cutting edge to leave Boedo with anything.

Eduardo Ponce, the eighteen-year-old prospect Villa Crespo Este signed after watching him play for Rada Tilly, found no room to shine. The striker who comes from Comodoro Rivadavia could offer little in attack. Alongside him, Maxi Sotomayor, another seventeen-year-old youngster, also failed to create consistent danger. Miguel Rossini in the visitors’ back line did his job, though he was forced into action by La Gloria’s attacks; the yellow card he received was a sign of that pressure. By contrast, Santino Vaccari in the hosts’ centre of defence, the twenty-five-year-old from Mendoza, was solid in the tackle and in building from the back.

Lucho Pereyra, the Argentine AM who plays for La Gloria, tried to link play with his teammates out wide, but the tempo of the match never allowed those quality connections the home side needed to extend their lead. Villa Crespo Este pressed late on looking for an equaliser, but La Gloria’s defence held comfortably. A typical match in these GBA leagues: tight, without any great flourish, where winning 1-0 against a rival who also set out not to lose is considered an achievement. La Gloria picked up three vital points in their battle near the top; Villa Crespo Este head home frustrated, with nothing to show for the trip.
