Match report

On a pitch that mud and fatigue had turned into a leveller, AC Villa Riachuelo and Cooperativa Abasto shared the points in a 1-1 draw that reflected the difficulties of two teams that never quite found their rhythm on matchday 17 of Primera L - GBA Norte. Both sides went in with the caution of a team playing in the rain and feeling the strain: a 4-4-2 for each, balanced mentality, with no signs of overreaching ambition. What followed was one of those matches that is hard to write about because nothing ever truly decisive happens, only fragments of intent interrupted by technical errors and chances that no one manages to seize with any clarity.

Villa Riachuelo found its best argument in Aníbal Brancato, the thirty-year-old forward who arrived years ago almost without pretensions and who this afternoon was lively in the search for goal. His performance was the sort that managers understand but supporters do not always celebrate: movements without passing precision, off-the-ball runs that were not taken advantage of, but sustained hunger. Brancato managed to score at some point in the match, putting the home side ahead on the scoreboard. It was his goal that posed the need for the visitors to respond, and that is what happened. Cristian Basaldua, the centre-back for Cooperativa Abasto who inherited more from football than from his family home, found a way to get into the opposition area and level the score. His goal, struck from a rather unusual position for a centre-back, momentarily balanced the match and gave Abasto some breathing room.

Vidal Bottura was the creative standout for Villa Riachuelo, the midfielder who grew up between port and soil, used to solving things with both feet. His assist for the home goal showed that at least one creative line was working for the hosts. At the other end, Santino Azkue, the 32-year-old left-back from Mendoza, provided the assist that allowed Basaldua to seal the draw, extending his involvement beyond the defensive side of the game.

Gabriel Zerbi, the Bahía Blanca centre-back who understands defending as constant communication, was booked in the match. Aníbal Brancato was also cautioned. Simón Bartoli, in the defensive line for Cooperativa Abasto, completed the set of bookings. Joaquín Zola, the 16-year-old Brazilian right-back whom Villa Riachuelo has been bringing through, did his job without any major scares, learning on a playing surface that does not forgive haste.

The draw was fair in its bleakness. Neither Villa Riachuelo nor Cooperativa Abasto offered enough reason for either side to deserve all three points. It was a match that would have been forgotten if not for the minimal consistency of both teams in at least avoiding defeat. In Primera L - GBA Norte, some Sundays are like this: draws nobody celebrates but everyone accepts, because that is what fatigue and mud dictate.
