Defensa Retiro Centro took all three points from Estrella Agronomía’s pitch on an afternoon when the football was sparing but effective, with the few ideas that emerged proving worth their weight in gold. In Primera L in the northern GBA area, on matchday 17, the visiting side read the match with a clarity the hosts never found. Although both teams arrived with similar intentions —both lining up in a 4-4-2 with a balanced mentality— it was Defensa Retiro Centro who made the most of their better spells to win 1-0, a result the pitch confirmed as fair.
Estrella Agronomía had the responsibility of carrying the game at home, but never managed to turn that territorial advantage into consistent danger. Néstor Aranzeta, the young goalkeeper of just twenty-one who guards the home goal, had to stay alert to the visitors’ attacking flashes, although Defensa Retiro Centro did not overwhelm them either. Ronaldo Ponce, the eighteen-year-old defensive midfielder developing at the club, tried to be the compass of Agronomía’s midfield, but found an opponent who contested every ball intelligently. Yago Lucero, the thirty-six-year-old left-back with all his experience, fought for every metre of his flank but could not do enough to halt the visitors’ advances.
Defensa Retiro Centro’s defensive work was practically flawless. Alejandro Gándara, the sixteen-year-old centre-back who impresses with his tactical maturity —he joined the club almost by chance two years ago during a friendly between schools— moved with the unusual composure of someone who already understands the game. Bautista Arcuri, another centre-back of just nineteen from Tandil, ended up being the protagonist of the goal that decided everything. In a match where space was tight and the play was slow, Arcuri capitalised on the chance that came his way and scored the only goal of the afternoon, making the difference on a pitch where Agronomía lacked the clarity to react.
Juan Mazza, the experienced thirty-three-year-old goalkeeper in the visitors’ goal, barely needed to make any notable saves thanks to his team’s defensive solidity. Hernán Grilli, the twenty-nine-year-old left-back, was key to containing Agronomía’s attacking flank, showing the experience of someone who knows the place. César Olivares, the twenty-eight-year-old central midfielder, shaped passing lanes that allowed Defensa Retiro Centro to maintain their balance despite playing away.
What remained from the match was the image of a visiting side that did not need much to get the job done. Defensa Retiro Centro were efficient, made the most of their moments and left with the victory in the bag. Estrella Agronomía were left wanting, unable to create the opening that would at least have allowed them to draw level. In a tight match where football offered no great thrills, the team that made fewer mistakes won.
