Match report

La Gloria de Boedo took a victory they knew how to manage with judgement against C. y Barrio Retiro on matchday 17 of Primera L - GBA Oeste. It was a tight match, the sort where both sides came out in a 4-4-2 and with balanced mindsets, which made for a tense game where space was the main protagonist. The hosts won 1-0 with a clinical edge the visitors could not match over the ninety minutes. It was not a match for the record books, but it was very much the kind of contest where whoever struck first had the advantage.

Bastian Brignoli, the left-sided midfielder for La Gloria who grew up in Mendoza and joined the club after a friendly in which he simply played well, was one of the biggest influences on the home side's attack. In midfield, where Joaco Montenegro from Retiro tried to break lines with youthful energy but also the mistakes of a seventeen-year-old —and a yellow card that left him on the brink of trouble— La Gloria found gaps. Xavier Aronica at right-back also kept up constant pressure, that kind of player who drifts in and out of midfield as if the middle of the pitch belonged to him, a habit he learned as a child in Comodoro Rivadavia where the Patagonian wind toughened him up.

León Bottura, the sixteen-year-old striker who arrived at the club after being spotted in a friendly against Juventud Unida, was the man who scored the only goal of the game. The youngster, who still wears the boots from the days he played on dirt pitches near San Martín in Comodoro Rivadavia, had the instinct to be where he needed to be. It was a goal built on defensive solidity: Santino Vaccari in the centre of defence kept things well organised, reading every movement, while the full-backs contained what C. y Barrio tried to produce down the flanks.

At the back, Tito De Luca on the visitors' side, that full-back who learned to play with both feet out of necessity imposed by Patagonian football, was solid in his covering duties. Tomás Mancini, the Uruguayan centre-half who arrived at Retiro years ago after a friendly in Tacuarembó, also defended without fuss, though he could not stop Lucho Pereyra in the role of attacking midfielder for La Gloria from causing danger every time he touched the ball. Retiro had a go, pressed at times, but lacked that final bit of precision to really trouble the Boedo goalkeeper.

La Gloria de Boedo controlled the tempo when needed and attacked when they saw space. C. y Barrio Retiro never gave up, but nor did they create the clear chances needed to take at least a point. A deserved victory in a match where the difference was minimal but decisive, where the hosts made the most of home advantage and left the Retiro side without answers in the moments that mattered most.
