Federación Constitución0 - 1Atlético Villa Devoto FC

Atlético Villa Devoto FC took three points from Federación Constitución’s pitch in a match where both teams played cautiously and the result ultimately felt fair, if narrow. Matchday 20 of the Primera L de CABA left the visitors with a victory that allows them to breathe a little in the table, while the home side are left unable to pick up points at home. It was the sort of fixture where neither side wanted to take too many risks, with balanced 4-4-2 formations that prioritised defensive solidity over attacking creativity.

Federación Constitución came out looking to press high in the first half, intent on making the most of home advantage. Rodolfo Viani, the nineteen-year-old striker who has been in the capital only a short time after his spell in Comodoro Rivadavia, moved about with real appetite in attack but found few clear chances. Centre-back Fede Basile, at thirty-five, showed his Mendoza experience with precise marking at the back, though he picked up a yellow card that affected him in later movements. Stefano Gómez, the Tucumán full-back of eighteen who is comfortable on both feet, tried to create danger down the right but Villa Devoto closed those spaces with discipline.

The visitors found their opening in a match where Sandro Caro, the twenty-two-year-old central midfielder with a rating of 7.6, was the team’s driving force. Caro, who learned to strike a ball in the neighbourhoods of Comodoro Rivadavia alongside his oil-worker father, was a constant presence in midfield and spread play out to the flanks where Ian Balerdi and Pepe Krause, both rated 7.2, kept the ball moving. Balerdi, born in Merlo twenty-seven years ago, found space out wide that the home defence could not fully shut down. The presence of Misael Bonaventura in defence, with his twenty-six years and his defensive solidity, allowed Villa Devoto to control the home side’s attacking bursts.

The goal that decided the match arrived without a detailed account of the move being recorded, but it was enough for Pichu Vigevani or one of the visitors’ attackers to find the finishing touch that was missing from the home side. Villa Devoto took advantage of some defensive imprecision or a moment of concentration loss from Federación Constitución to claim the only goal of the afternoon. It was a match where the difference came down to details, to those small things that separate a side that manages to convert from one that cannot find the net.

The result keeps Villa Devoto’s hopes alive in the battle at the top, while Federación Constitución will have to work out why they are struggling to find the goals at their ground. It was a tight match, as the post-match analysis suggests, where both teams did their job but only one knew how to make the most of its chances. In the Primera L de CABA, those are the matches usually decided by the side better prepared to suffer and win without playing brilliantly.
