Match report

Club Atlético Los Andes recorded a trouble-free victory over Atlético Bernal on matchday six of the Primera E of the GBA Sur, with a 2-0 scoreline that reflected the home side’s organised work and the visitors’ inability to create any dangerous chances. In an afternoon of direct football and not too much excitement, the home side controlled the tempo with ease, backed by a solid defence and the containment work of Gerónimo Bianchi, who not only marked well but also had the vision to slip passes forward. Atlético Bernal arrived without any convincing attacking weapons, condemned to suffer a defeat that leaves the visitors in a difficult area of the table.

The home defence worked as a compact unit. Bruno Bastianelli, the 31-year-old left-back who has come through a career without too much glory but built on quiet graft, had no real trouble down his side. In the heart of defence, Agustín Quiroga, that San Juan centre-back who learnt to be versatile from a young age, moved confidently and was one of the first to spot Bernal’s attacks. On the right, Valentín Costa tried to get forward a few times, but at 21 and with a 6.5 rating he was nowhere near being a serious problem for the auriazul defence. Valentín Medina, the visitors’ left-back, who at 34 is still carrying out defensive duties on the front line, barely managed to hold up the home midfielders. Pablo Acosta, the 29-year-old Uruguayan central midfielder, was booked for rough play, a reflection of an Atlético Bernal side desperate to find space.

The difference was made by Gabriel Aizpurúa in the home attack. The 23-year-old Bahía Blanca striker, one of those youngsters who grow up in neighbourhoods where football is the only way out, scored one of the goals with the precision that marks him out. With a 7.2 rating on an afternoon when he was among the best on the pitch, Aizpurúa took advantage of the chances created by a side that knew how to be vertical without being reckless. Quiroga, the centre-back, completed the scoreline with another goal that put the result beyond doubt.

Atlético Bernal never found a way to really trouble them. Their balanced 4-4-2 shape did not create numerical superiority in any area, and Roberto Aguirre’s attempts down the right flank of Los Andes were comfortably contained. Gerónimo Bianchi was key to the home side’s build-up from midfield, with an assist that confirmed his solid display and 6.5 rating in an area where the visiting side could not establish parity.

The match ended without surprises. Los Andes managed a comfortable lead against an opponent who lacked the clarity or the cutting edge to even cause concern. A victory of the sort that lifts the home side higher in the table and allows them to keep collecting points steadily in a division where every point counts. For Atlético Bernal, it is time to rethink things.
