Club Atlético Sportivo Colonia Sur2 - 4Mataderos

Mataderos arrived in Caballito with a clear mission and carried it out without compromise. The 4-2 final sums up an afternoon where the away side was more clinical, more consistent and, above all, more ruthless at the moments that mattered. Federación Caballito had its spaces, its chances too, but did not know how to make the most of them when they came along. Both sides came out in a similar shape, a balanced 4-4-2, which promised a match of constant contact and few concessions. It did not turn out that way: Mataderos imposed their tempo from early on and the hosts never found a way to counter that sustained pressure, which ended up being devastating.

The visitors’ comfortable win was no accident but the result of superior tactical execution. Mataderos controlled the middle spaces, anticipated movements and took advantage of transitions with pace. Federación Caballito were overrun in several areas of the pitch, especially at moments when they needed to win the ball back quickly and could not do so. The home defenders were slow to provide cover, and that was the gap through which Mataderos struck all four of their goals. At the away end there was defensive solidity, although they also needed their goalkeeper to come up with the goods in dangerous situations. The four goals arrived without any overwhelming superiority in possession being apparent, but rather through a sharper reading of the match.

For Federación Caballito, this is a result that hurts on matchday three, when the tournament is only just getting started. The two goals they managed to score gave the numbers a touch of dignity, but not enough to draw any positive conclusions. Mataderos, by contrast, leave Caballito with three points worth their weight in gold in this Primera H of the GBA Sur. It was the victory of the side that executed better, that did not give away unnecessary spaces and that punished every opponent error. That is Argentine football in these leagues: efficiency over romance.
