What the 4-4-2 is in football: pros and cons
The 4-4-2 is a formation with 4 defenders, 4 midfielders and 2 strikers. It is the classic, balanced system: it covers the full width of the pitch and keeps two men up front.
The 4-4-2 is probably the best-known formation in football and for decades the default in England. It has a back four (two centre-backs and two full-backs), a flat midfield four and a strike partnership. Its great virtue is balance: the team is well set to defend and to attack, and the two banks of four cover the whole width. The downside is that only two central midfielders hold the middle, and against sides with three there the ball can be lost in that zone.
There are variants, such as the 4-4-2 diamond, which packs the middle with a holding midfielder and a number 10 at the cost of width.
In ELDT the 4-4-2 is among the 15 available formations, together with the 4-4-2 diamond. The line-up guide describes it as the balanced classic: a good starting point if you have an even squad and two strikers who complement each other.
