What the 5-3-2 is: the defensive formation

The 5-3-2 is a formation with 5 defenders (three centre-backs and two wing-backs), 3 midfielders and 2 strikers. It is a system built to defend with numbers and break quickly.

The 5-3-2 reinforces the defence with a third centre-back. The two full-backs become wing-backs: they defend when the opposition attacks and push up the flank when the team wins the ball. Up front two strikers wait for the counter. It is the typical shape of sides facing a stronger opponent or protecting a result; its weak point is that if the wing-backs do not get forward the team is left with few men to attack.

In ELDT the 5-3-2 is available alongside the 5-4-1 and the 5-2-3, and the guide calls it ultra defensive. Combined with a defensive mentality and the counter-attack style, it is a classic plan for a trip to a big club or for a cup tie where a draw takes you straight to penalties.
