El Fortín de Villa Lugano left no room for doubt in Villa Lugano. With a 5-0 thrashing against Club Monte Castro, the home side produced a merciless afternoon of football where the visitors could barely breathe. Both teams arrived with the same tactical setup — balanced 4-4-2 — but the difference in the quality of execution was vast. Monte Castro started with intent but ran into a team that turned every defensive error into a goal.
Quique Schwartzman, the 37-year-old Colombian midfielder, was the midfield workhorse. With two goals to his name, the experienced midfielder showed that age is no obstacle when there is know-how. Emiliano Spinelli on the left was another ghost for the visiting defence: he scored once and set up another, exploiting the space Monte Castro left so naively. Leandro Stefani, the Mendoza-born centre-back, just 18, also joined the party with a goal, showing great composure in a defence that was more solid than effective. Pepe Serrano and Antonio Bianco held together what there was to hold; with two centre-backs of standout quality, the men from Villa Lugano were never in danger. Andrés Lara, Monte Castro's 16-year-old youngster, picked up an early yellow card that set the tone for an afternoon that was going to be a long one.
Club Monte Castro's performance was nothing short of a shipwreck. Cristian Piotrowski and Tincho Ávila tried to make something happen, but when the whole defensive structure starts to give way from the first half, the striker ends up playing football on his own. The thrashing lays bare a real gap between these sides in Primera L - GBA Sur. For El Fortín it was a chess match; for Monte Castro, an afternoon to forget quickly and seek mental reset ahead of the next matchdays.
