Match report

Montserrat dictated the tempo to suit themselves at the Barrio Montserrat pitch and killed the game off without any drama. Two goals in the first half were enough for Independiente Parque Centenario to be unable to respond. The tactical balance between both squads —two 4-4-2 line-ups with evenly matched mindsets— was broken as soon as the game got under way. The home side found space where the visitors left gaps and took advantage of them with pragmatism. It was not a match of bursts or complete dominance, but it was one of efficiency. When it came to finishing, Montserrat scored.

Elián Berecibar opened the scoring with his goal, that 34-year-old midfielder who still knows where to make his runs into the box. A veteran of the club, Berecibar finished with precision when the chance came his way. Then it was Sandro Vargas who extended the lead, the 25-year-old centre-back taking advantage of a disorganised spell that Parque Centenario could not contain. The visiting defenders —with Gabi Benevento, just 19, in goal— struggled to find stability. Victor Barba in holding midfield did what he could, but without any support in attack they never managed to create real pressure. Gino Silvestre, Montserrat's forward, moved things around with ease, though he picked up a yellow card for not holding back. Damian Tévez at right-back was comfortable defensively too, while Tomi Bonaccorsi kept his composure at the back.

Montserrat did not need any more. Parque Centenario barely had a couple of genuine attempts, with Ethan Argento not finding enough support down the left to build anything direct. It was a comfortable win that reflects the difference between the squads: the home side showed greater depth and versatility. For the visitors, the job now is to accept they were a gear short and rebuild quickly. The three points stayed in Montserrat.
