Match report

Juventud San Cristóbal took a deserved win on matchday two of the Primera L GBA Norte, beating CJ Villa Lugano by the narrowest of margins in a match where both squads understood the importance of not giving up space. Nahuel Saliba’s goal was enough for the home side to control the tempo of the match without needing to unleash an attacking avalanche. Villa Lugano came looking for points but found a well-organised defence that made the most of the tactical balance both sides set out from the outset, with identical formations and similar mentalities that ultimately produced a tight match where any mistake could be fatal.

Juventud San Cristóbal’s centre-back, at 27 and with academy experience, was the man to open the scoring in a match where the full-backs, especially Elián Valenzuela on the left, played a key role in containment. Rodolfo Villegas on the right had his moments of imbalance, with that 7.7 rating reflecting his good work in transition. Bauti Zaffari on the left provided his usual left foot from the flank. At the back, Ariel Tamargo picked up a yellow card in the second half but kept the line firm in the face of Chacho Merlo’s efforts, as the visitors’ frontman tried in vain to find an equaliser.

For CJ Villa Lugano, the afternoon was one of learning rather than satisfaction. Toto Ferrari, only 17 and in central defence, gained experience though he was troubled by the movement of the home forwards. Oliverio Escalante on the right failed to create any real danger in attack. The bookings for Ferrari and Merlo summed up a visiting defence that prioritised avoiding exposure rather than trying to change the course of the match. With this result, Juventud San Cristóbal pick up their first three points of the campaign at home, while Villa Lugano will have to rethink their approach ahead of the next matchdays.
