Defensores de Zárate did not get the debut they deserved in Primera G del GBA Oeste. Against a Club Mercedes BA side who arrived with a clear idea of attacking from the first minute, the home team were outdone in terms of finishing despite lining up in a balanced 4-4-2 formation that never quite worked. Pocho Guzmán, the 24-year-old visiting midfielder who grew up in the shipyards of Bahía Blanca, opened the scoring with a goal that summed up both sides’ intentions. Mercedes knew how to make the most of their spells of clarity with a clinical edge that Zárate could not match, highlighting the differences in execution even though both sides adopted a similar balanced tactical approach on either flank.
Wilfredo Sandoval, the 28-year-old left-back from Comodoro Rivadavia, tried to contain the flank from which the danger was coming, but it was not enough. In the centre of defence, Agus Arbide, a 33-year-old veteran who began without high expectations in the fifth division, did what he could to organise a back line that proved porous. Nahue Valentini, the youngest defensive midfielder in the squad at just 22, was unable to close down the spaces for a Club Mercedes side who moved the ball with ease. The visitors had Mirko Zerbi, a 20-year-old Bolivian striker with a rating of 7.7 who posed a constant threat, as well as Tadeo Vilas on the left wing, who made the most of every opportunity he had on the ball. Antonio Briganti, Mercedes’ full-back with a past at merleño club, was also an important factor in the visitors’ quick transitions.
It was a deserved victory in a match that never became exciting. Defensores de Zárate found no answers in attack, while Mercedes controlled the tempo without needing to commit too many players forward. The home side went into the dressing room knowing that the margin for error in this division is minimal, and that the next matchdays will be decisive in getting a season back on track after it began on the wrong foot.
