Match report

Paternal took a victory that feels like justice in Riachuelo, in a match where both teams used identical formations but the visitors found what the home side could not finish. The final 1-0 was decided by the details, in that ability to read the match that some have and others are still looking for. Villa Riachuelo set up in a balanced system but lacked cutting edge in the opposition box, where Gerardo Lazcano, the veteran striker of 36 years, failed to turn his experience into clear chances. Patricio Viardot in the home goal did what he could, although he was up against an opponent who knew how to manage the tempo intelligently.

The difference lay in the defensive solidity shown by Paternal. Noé Braun, a central defender of just 21 years but with a rating of 7.5, was a rock in the visitors' back line, reading the game naturally and covering spaces that Lazcano tried to exploit. Jesús Zanetti, Paternal's goalkeeper, also 20 years old, had less to do than Viardot but when called upon he was there. Right-back Diego Calabretta, who picked up a yellow card during the match, was solid on the right flank, while Alexis Zaffari handled the left side well. Lauti Aguilar, the 29-year-old striker, did his job without brilliant flashes but effectively, pressing when necessary.

For Villa Riachuelo, there was the feeling of a match that could have been won, though it is only fair to recognise that Paternal was never really in trouble. Lucio Bauer, the 21-year-old right-sided midfielder, tried down his channel but found no continuity. The home side had possession but lacked creativity in the final third, that touch that turns efforts into goals. Paternal remains firmly in the top positions, while Villa Riachuelo will have to look again at how to turn its ambitions into points.
