General Güemes de Balvanera came through a see-saw match against Sportivo Once Sur, winning 3-2 at home on the opening matchday of Primera L - GBA Oeste. It was a lively contest between two sides that opted for similar 4-4-2 set-ups, where the home side defended the key moments of trouble better and made the most of their chances in attack. The Balvanera outfit took the three points deservedly, though the visitors perhaps merited more for what they created in the second half.
Octavio Klein opened the scoring for General Güemes with a goal that reflected his solidity as a defensive midfielder, then Máximo Rastelli —at thirty-one years of age on the pitch— stretched the lead. Right winger Camilo Arechaga also got on the scoresheet, while Lucas Yáñez completed the home side's attacking work in a match where Leandro Vidale was a wall at centre-back. For the visitors, Walter Bonaventura and Silvio Merlo pulled goals back to add excitement to the closing minutes. Bonaventura, at just twenty-one years old, showed that young striker's instinct, while Merlo —the taciturn Paraguayan— finished with precision in the box.
Once Sur's response had merit, with Jorge Bonincontro and Cristian Iturbe contributing from midfield through assists that brought their side closer. However, defensive errors at key moments allowed General Güemes to land blows that proved decisive. For the Balvanera side, this narrow victory leaves a good opening feeling; for Sportivo Once Sur, the lesson is that in a short league there is no room to come back from such big deficits. Pure football, without unnecessary drama, where the side that executed better when it had to do so won.
