Montserrat did not need any grand fanfare to see off Defensores de Retiro Centro on matchday 11 of Primera L GBA Norte. The 2-0 was decisive, precise, the result of a side that knew how to read the fixture from the first minute. Both teams arrived on level terms, intent on playing, but the home side found the cracks in the visitors’ defence first and exploited them without mercy.
Gino Silvestre was the executioner of the afternoon, the thirty-three-year-old striker who keeps finding the net when the team needs it. With an assist as well as his goal, he moved with the intelligence of someone who has seen it all on a pitch. Román Arana also scored, contributing from the left flank with that ability to make the right decisions at the right moments. In midfield, Sebastián Bassi conducted the play without haste, distributing from central areas with clarity; all that was left for him was a yellow card, a reminder of the limits of the rules. Elián Berecibar worked tirelessly on the right, providing stability to a side that was never really put under too much pressure.
For the Retiro side, Hernán Grilli tried to hold firm from full-back but came up against a home side that was playing quicker. Damián Vitale, at thirty-six, could not provide the attacking weight his team needed from advanced midfield. Bautista Arcuri, the youngest centre-back on the pitch, had to stay alert throughout, but the defence ended up being overrun. Defensores left the Monumental without clear answers: a match where the opponent was not superior in play, but was in efficiency. For Montserrat, three home points that keep them in the hunt. For Retiro Centro, the need to rethink what went wrong in that set-up which, in theory, should have allowed them to be closer to the result.
