Match report

Parque Avellaneda and Paternal signed off on a goalless draw at the Avellaneda pitch, in a match built on tactical balance and both sides’ lack of attacking cutting edge. With identical 4-4-2 formations and balanced mentalities, the matchday 17 fixture in Primera L - GBA Sur was played at pace but without the clear chances needed to break the deadlock. The home side had the backing of their supporters, but they could not turn that advantage into any meaningful attacking moves to pin back the visitors’ defence.

The side managed by ELDT set out with the intention of controlling the tempo from midfield. Luciano Bonechi, the 30-year-old Uruguayan central midfielder with a 7.0 rating, was the fulcrum from which Parque Avellaneda tried to build their moves. Alongside him, the defensive line with Valentín Bianco in central defence did its job without alarms: the 26-year-old from Bahía Blanca picked up a yellow card but kept his concentration for the full 90 minutes. Up front, Julián Spadafora, the 22-year-old striker from Comodoro Rivadavia, looked to link up with his team-mates but could not find the spaces he needed. The home side lacked attacking punch, that extra bit of depth that might have consistently troubled the visitors’ back line.

Paternal arrived in Avellaneda with the intention of giving nothing away. Alexis Zaffari, the 20-year-old left-back from Rosario with a 7.2 rating, was a constant threat down his flank, carrying danger forward whenever he had the ball. In midfield, Edgardo Ortega brought experience from the left at 28 years of age, while Milton Tomé, the 25-year-old centre-back from Chaco, was dependable in the defensive third. The visiting side played compactly, without giving away unnecessary space, and withstood the home pressure without the match ever threatening to boil over.

The truth is that neither side had the sharpness needed to open the pitch and create clear chances. The match was decided by details, by those tight marks and those passes that never quite connected with the attacking intent. Spadafora was booked in his effort to be more incisive, while Bianco had already been cautioned at the other end. The lack of creativity and the defensive caution ended up sealing a fair draw in which both sides left points on the table but also took something away: the certainty that at least they did not lose.

The result leaves Parque Avellaneda and Paternal with mixed feelings. For ELDT, this sort of match is usually a wasted opportunity when playing at home. For the visitors, it is a point earned that keeps their chances alive, albeit without much reason to celebrate. Primera L - GBA Sur continues with these kinds of balances that defined the Avellaneda fixture.
