Match report

Patriotas Pompeya came away with a victory that reflects their performance on the pitch, although Belgrano Villa Crespo do not deserve to leave empty-handed after standing their ground away from home. The 1-0 was the result of a match in which both teams lined up in similar formations, 4-4-2, with balanced mentalities that prevented any major imbalances. The goal came in a context where the home side were slightly more effective in their attacks, but the difference lay more in the finishing than in the creation of chances. Belgrano Villa Crespo even came close to an equaliser at several points in the second half, but their efforts broke down against a home defence that knew how to shut up shop when necessary.

Nahuel Peñalva's performance on the right for Patriotas Pompeya was a constant turning point. The seventeen-year-old winger is still polishing his game, but the 7.7 rating he earned reflects the intelligent link-up play he maintained throughout the ninety minutes. In midfield, Gael Bertola, in his central midfield role, was the anchor the home side needed to maintain their organisation in the face of the opposition's attempts. Silvio Marchetti, a thirty-six-year-old left-back with plenty of experience, gave Belgrano Villa Crespo's right-back very little to work with. On the other side, Julián Atxaga showed defensive experience despite his 6.6 rating, but it was not enough to completely neutralise the home side's direct play. Darío Zaccaro tried to provide the visiting midfield with greater depth down the right, without much success.

Gino Sánchez up front for Patriotas Pompeya did not have the best of nights with a 7.2, but he was the forward who applied just enough pressure to unsettle the opposition defence. What Belgrano Villa Crespo take away from La Matanza is a sense of an incomplete match: they had their chances and wasted them, and that comes at a high cost in the Primera División. The home side collect three points from a match where the football was organised but lacking in major excitement—about right for matchday eleven, where the margins tend to be narrow.
