Copa ELDT: shocks, routs and penalty drama on 27 October

The Copa ELDT served up plenty of drama on Tuesday, with two shocks sending lower-division sides through to the last 16. Chaco For Ever, from the Primera S, held Primera Nacional side Deportivo Almagro Veteranos to a 1-1 draw before winning a 7-6 penalty thriller. But the other upset was even bigger: Cuervos, from the Primera D, eliminated Primera Nacional club Sportivo La Lucila after a 2-2 draw, winning 4-3 on penalties. These are the results that turn the form book upside down and show that anyone can dream in this cup.

The big wins were almost an afterthought compared with the drama, but there were still plenty of them. LOS GURISES FC tore Invasor Zim FC apart with a decisive 0-6 victory, while Soldados Mancos F.C. left no doubt against Pibes Floresta, winning 0-4. Árbitros fc and Club Universitario de Berisso were just as convincing, beating Villa Pueyrredón and Parque Chacabuco 4-0 and 3-0 respectively. MCD completed the routs with a 3-0 win over Provincia Barracas.

Penalties set the tone on the day. Alongside the two shocks already mentioned, Sportivo Pergamino had to go to a shoot-out against Sportivo Bahía Blanca after a 2-2 draw, with Pergamino winning 5-4. Three matches were decided from the spot, showing that anything can happen in the closing stages of this cup.

The really interesting part was the three clashes between human managers: Pibes Floresta faced Soldados Mancos F.C., Villa Pueyrredón met Árbitros fc, and Invasor Zim FC took on LOS GURISES FC. Nothing was left to chance in those three matches, with emphatic wins underlining the difference between the sides. These are the fixtures where each manager’s tactics are fully on show on the pitch, without the computer getting in the way.

There were 16 matches in total across 4 cups, and the round ended with the sort of stories that get discussed in the dressing room afterwards. Some went home frustrated, others celebrated a penalty miracle, and several enjoyed the satisfaction of winning by a ruthless margin. That’s the Copa ELDT: a draw where you can face anyone, wherever they come from.
