Copa ELDT: shocks, thrashings and penalty drama in the last 16

The Copa ELDT served up drama by the bucketload in the last 16. Atl. Pehuen-Co of Primera P, a lower division, handed Primera Nacional, the second tier, side Chascomús a cinematic beating: the GBA Oeste outfit won 3-2 in a cracking match that proved anyone can catch anyone cold in this cup. But the biggest shock of the lot came from Chaco For Ever, who went for it from the off and beat Monte Castro 5-1; quite something for a lower-division side playing away, but they absolutely ran the show. La Verdad de San Cristóbal also shut the door on Def. Almagro Oeste with a solid 1-0 win, while Mil Ojotas saw off Atlético Barracas 2-0.

There was no shortage of thrashings, either. Club Universitario de Berisso were unstoppable, putting 6 past Aurora de Parque Centenario without mercy. Defensores de Tigre Norte caused plenty of damage too, hammering La Gloria de Núñez 7-1. Cuervos beat La Gloria de Flores 5-0 in a completely one-sided affair, while MCD and Atlético Boedo served up the same scoreline: both battered their opponents 5-0. The machine was relentless that night.

The penalty shoot-outs brought their own share of drama. In the classic sudden-death scenario, CJ Monte Castro and Invasor Zim FC drew 0-0 in normal time, but Invasor brought out the heavy artillery in the shoot-out to win 7-6, leaving hearts right on the edge of an infarction. Defensores de Tristán Suárez also failed to break a 1-1 deadlock against Defensores del Norte, with another shoot-out ending in glory for the Norte side, 5-4.

What made it particularly interesting was that several ties featured two real managers, with all the tension that brings. The most painful one was Cuervos' 5-0 win over La Gloria de Flores: one manager conducting the orchestra while the other watched the match slip through his fingers. Universitario de Berisso's 6-0 victory over Aurora was just as brutal. There were tighter battles too, such as Soldados Mancos' 1-0 win over Atlas de Caseros and Cóndor's 3-0 victory against FC Escalada, but every match had that extra edge when real people were in both dugouts.
