The Copa ELDT served up one of those matchdays that remind you why football is loved. While some expected the sides from the higher divisions to steamroller everyone, what happened was exactly what cup football is all about: the underdogs stood up and landed a punch. The biggest shock came from Cooperativa Boedo, who knocked out Atlético Pompeya of the Primera Nacional, the second tier, with a convincing 2-0 win despite coming from Primera P, a lower division. But they were not the only ones. Club Atlético Pehuen-Co put four past Gastronómicos Unidos de Hurlingham without reply and went home smiling. Pibes Floresta got the better of Atlético Ferrocarril Midland on penalties, 5-3, after a goalless draw. That is Argentine football when everyone shares the same pitch.
The big wins came from the sides who knew exactly how to go about it. Aurora de Chacarita were on the wrong end of an 8-0 against Condor, a scoreline that hurts just to read. Central de Chacarita El Barrio suffered the same fate, losing 0-8 to Sportivo Castelar. Defensa Flores Oeste showed no mercy, beating Soldados Mancos 0-7. Argentinos de Coghlan and Manchester Goated also lost heavily, both going down 5-0 to MCD and Árbitros FC respectively. Once it starts going that way, it is hard to stop the rot.
The penalty shoot-outs brought their share of drama too. Fifteen matches were decided from twelve yards, with a manager in each one holding their breath. Sportivo Once Sur beat Social y Deportivo Abasto 5-4 in the shoot-out. Aurora de Parque Centenario knocked out Estrella Liniers 3-1. And, of course, Atlético Monte Castro FC stood firm at home against El Fortín de Villa del Parque, winning 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw. These are the matches that still hurt the following day.
There was also a battle between the managers who really run the show. Federación Belgrano R took on AC Parque Chacabuco and won 2-0. La Gloria de Flores held nothing back either, dispatching Club Atlético Bóver comfortably. The most emphatic tie was Soldados Mancos against Defensa Flores Oeste: a 7-0 that speaks for itself. Patriotas Palermo Hollywood edged past El Fortín de Villa Soldati, 1-0. This is what it looks like when two tacticians meet on the pitch, with no computer manager involved.
The Copa ELDT has once again shown that anyone can beat anyone here. From the lower divisions to the higher ones, from CABA to the province, anyone can turn up on a Tuesday and leave everything out there. That is what these tournaments are all about: surprises, penalty drama and hope alive until the final second. Bring on the next round.
