Nueva Estrella Almagro took a win that hurts, leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of the home side. In Palermo Hollywood, with their twin line-ups and balanced ambitions, Unión tried to hold on to the match but it was not enough. The final 3-2 was generous in the numbers because the visitors knew when to press and when to take the pace off, while the home side made positioning errors that cost them dearly. Darío Valentini scored for the home side with that versatile foot that defines him, but his efforts faded away on the pitch. Unión's other goal was scored by Edu Leguizamón, a 34-year-old veteran who is trying to squeeze the last few cartridges out of his time in the division. Both were booked, a sign of a rough match where the referees had to step in constantly.
Estrella Almagro, however, made better use of their resources. Renzo Gordon, a 29-year-old with Rosario experience, scored one of the visitors' goals with the precision of someone who knows where to find space. Franco Rosa, a right winger of 36 raised among the dockside warehouses, also celebrated with the composure of a player who has seen it all. Midfielder Giuliano Garrido completed the visitors' tally with a goal that proved key in sealing the victory, although he too saw yellow. Cristian Altuna, the 32-year-old centre-back with that pronounced scar on his brow that defines him, was practically impenetrable: an assist on his record shows his attacking contribution. Augusto Zurita's left foot, the 26-year-old from Mendoza, was constantly awkward for the home defence.
What happened to Unión was a battle lost in the details. Two goals were not enough against a side that knows how to handle the pressure of playing away. Estrella Almagro, despite not dazzling, were more effective. In the Primera L de Capital, when you go away and win like that, it is because you have the makings of something. Unión will keep trying, but today they had no choice but to watch the rival walk away with the three points under their arm.
