CJ Villa Lugano closed out matchday 20 of Primera L with a solid display that allowed it to beat El Vencedor de San Telmo without drama in a match where tactical balance was only that: an illusion. Both teams came out with the 4-4-2 as their base structure, but on the pitch there was far more attacking clarity on the home side. The Santelmo defence, with José Bonansea and Maicol Simionato at its heart, had to suffer more than expected against an attack that found gaps where there should not have been any.
The match unfolded at that characteristic pace of the leagues in Buenos Aires Province: hard-fought, without too much excitement in the first forty minutes, but with Villa Lugano controlling the spaces from midfield. Oliverio Escalante, the 24-year-old midfielder who brings his own story from Comodoro Rivadavia, had an influence on the game down the right, creating dangerous situations with a sharpness that went beyond his 7.5 rating. On the left side, Aaron Porras kept reading the game with that experience that comes from spending years at a club, while Santino Fernández, at 33 and already with a yellow card to his name, handled the right side of the defence with the coolness of someone who knows every corner of the stadium where he plays.
El Vencedor de San Telmo tried to respond with their own weapons, but Horacio Wisniewski, the 22-year-old forward, could not find the link-up that would connect him with the rest of his team-mates. The visiting centre-backs, Bonansea and Simionato —the latter also booked—, were more concerned with containing than with playing out from the back. The home side's pressure was constant without needing to be suffocating. Víctor Bettega, the 31-year-old playmaker who organises the game from midfield, appeared at just the right moments to tilt the contest, and his authority allowed Chacho Merlo space to move in the opposition box.
The goals came without too much surprise. Villa Lugano were superior in their execution and in their ability to turn the visitor's defensive mistakes into clear chances. Bettega scored one of them, taking advantage with the composure that defines a player in top form. Merlo added the second, closing out an afternoon that was more about control than heroics. The 25-year-old forward, who grew up in Merlo scoring goals on local pitches, once again proved that he knows how to be in the right place when the chance arrives.
El Vencedor de San Telmo were never a side to be underestimated, but nor did they create enough to seriously threaten the home goal. Villa Lugano managed the match from the final twenty minutes without needing to push themselves to the limit. A comfortable win that strengthens the team's position in the table and reflects the work built up over the matchday.
