Match report

Villa Crespo were a brick wall. Belgrano Villa Crespo and Nueva Estrella Boedo shared the points in a 0-0 draw that reflected two sides with similar game plans, both lining up in a balanced 4-4-2, without the daring needed to break through the opposition’s defensive lock. Belgrano’s pitch was a chessboard where nobody dared to push the pawns forward with conviction. It was the sort of match that is as common in Primera I as tattered banners in the stands: correct, functional, predictable. Two teams who played not to lose rather than to win.

Felipe Cerda did his job without any scares in the home goal, although there was little for him to do beyond dealing with a couple of harmless shots from the visitors. For Nueva Estrella Boedo, Diego Bevilacqua was not seriously tested either. In defence, Leandro Boschi anchored Villa Crespo’s back line well, his thirty-two years combining experience with defensive solidity. The midfielders of both teams — including Alberto Najib for Nueva Estrella, with his thirty-three years of experience — did the work of shielding the defence, but the football remained stuck in the middle of the pitch. Saúl Berasategui, the visitors’ young forward, tried but could not find any space. Liam Muñoz on Villa Crespo’s left wing, another thirty-something who keeps running, also failed to create sustained danger. Cerda was shown a yellow card late on, an unnecessary booking in a match where the tension never escalated.

The draw satisfied nobody because it pleased nobody. For Villa Crespo, playing at home and failing to get the better of the visitors always hurts a little more. For Nueva Estrella, an away point is respectable but insufficient if they want to seriously challenge in this Primera I group. What remains is the taste of a wasted opportunity and the feeling that both teams were waiting for the other to make a mistake before risking anything of their own.
