Match report

Liniers left Constitución with the three points in the bag, but it had to work hard for every single one of them. Ferro stood up to them at home with a balanced 4-4-2 that never let up until the end, though in the end it went down 3-2 in a cracking match where both teams refused to sit back. Two identical line-ups, two similar mindsets, and the result was what it had to be: chaotic, exciting, with goals arriving when nobody expected the scoring to stop.

Matías Quiroga was the face of Ferro on the pitch. At 29, the home striker scored twice to put his team back in the match, showing he still has plenty of firepower in his boots. But from the other end came the men who decided the story: Cacho Pedraza also struck twice for the visitors, and that was enough because Vicente Falcón, the 17-year-old youngster Liniers rescued from a Mendoza pitch, had the nous to be where he needed to be and poke in the third. There is something about that lad that smells of an easy goal. Enzo Saborido, Liniers’ Brazilian full-back, picked up a yellow card trying to stop what was getting away from him down the right, but did his defensive work without fuss. At the back, Nicolás Retegui and Marcelo Arrieta held together what could be held in a visiting defence that had to weather a few storms. Tacuarembó’s goalkeeper did the business at the key moments.

Ferro leaves with the feeling it was in there, right in the match, but it made the mistakes that Liniers punishes when Pedraza is free. For the visitors, there is the lesson that tidy line-ups do not always guarantee comfortable wins: on the pitch, something else gets decided, something more visceral. Three tight points that are worth the same in the end, after all.
