Villa Riachuelo came out on top last night with a win that arrived just in time, tight, without excess but not without merit either. Against Parque Avellaneda on matchday 4 of Primera L de GBA Sur, the home side defended solidly with its balanced 4-4-2 and made the most of the chances created by a midfield where Francisco Lara, at 26 and in the form of his life, pulled the strings with a precision that ran through the whole first half. The balanced mentality of both sides promised a match of tactical attrition rather than spectacle, and that is exactly what they served up on the dusty pitch of southern Buenos Aires.
Villa Riachuelo's dominance was gradual but clear. Lucio Bauer, the 21-year-old right-sided midfielder, was moving awkwardly out wide, forcing Leandro Elizalde, the visitors' left winger, to think more about tracking back than pushing forward. Parque Avellaneda, with Lito Wisniewski trying to organise the midfield from a holding role, never managed to break through the home side's defensive set-up. Fabián Pedraza, just a 17-year-old youngster but with a combative calmness in the middle, anticipated attacking moves and won duels he should not have been winning at his age. At the back, Agus Bonomi, the visiting goalkeeper who inherited both craft and listlessness from his old man, had to stay alert on a couple of occasions.
It was Jorge Cordero who finally broke the deadlock. The 28-year-old central midfielder, who arrived at Villa Riachuelo almost by accident in a friendly tournament years ago, was the one who scored the goal that settled the afternoon. Lara's ability to break lines from deep opened up space that Cordero exploited with the cool head of someone who knows every inch of this club. One-nil and, in practice, the end of the drama.
In the second half Parque Avellaneda reacted by trying to apply pressure, but their midfield, with Wisniewski as the defensive reference, did not have enough bite to create any real danger. Villa Riachuelo managed the game intelligently, aware that an away side travelling from the south does not have the energy for desperate assaults. Elizalde tried a couple of times down the left without much impact, while for the hosts Bauer finished the fixture doing his job without dazzling but without putting a foot wrong.
It was a win in which neither side showed any great attacking flourish, but Villa Riachuelo deserved the victory. Lara and Cordero led that balance, Pedraza matured another night in defence, and Bauer fulfilled his role as a functional midfielder. Parque Avellaneda leave with no real attacking credit, with Bonomi in goal doing what he could against a team that was simply more effective. The South takes the three points on matchday 4.
