Match report

Sociedad Parque Centenario and El Fortín de Villa Lugano shared the points in a match that had everything the football of Primera L of GBA Sur can offer: goals, a fast tempo, and two sides unwilling to give an inch. The 3-3 draw on matchday 4 left both teams with mixed feelings, because although each picked up a point, the match got away from them in the passages where they had the most control. Both sides’ balanced 4-4-2 line-ups promised an intense duel, and that is exactly what it was: no room to breathe, with quick transitions and moments of defensive confusion that the forwards exploited ruthlessly.

Gustavo Saracho was the standout for the home side, the 22-year-old central midfielder born in Santiago del Estero, who tonight showed why he has a rating of 8.4. The midfielder made his mark twice, scoring with composure at the moments his side needed a push. Toño Garay, the centre-back from Resistencia, also added to the attacking return with a goal that briefly extended Sociedad Parque Centenario’s lead. Uriel Schiavi, the 27-year-old Patagonian forward who knows well what it means to battle on these pitches, was the scorer of the hosts’ third goal as well as providing an assist that helped set up the attack.

At the other end, El Fortín de Villa Lugano came away as visitors with no intention of settling. Wilfredo Turrini, the 30-year-old striker also from Patagonian roots, was the most awkward opponent for the home defence with his lethal finishing: he scored twice and made his experience count, along with his rating of 8.4 which puts him on a par with Saracho. Quique Schwartzman, the Colombian central midfielder, 37 years old and still full of zip, scored the visitors’ third in a match where the midfielders were undeniable protagonists. Pepe Serrano, the Bahía Blanca centre-back who grew up in the shadow of the municipal stadium, provided an assist in the attacking play while also receiving a yellow card for his defensive hardness. Antonio Bianco also saw yellow in his role as a defensive marker.

What was clear is that Sociedad Parque Centenario were more clinical at home in the early stages, managing to build leads that seemed manageable. But El Fortín de Villa Lugano never gave up. With Wilfredo Turrini as an tireless striker and Schwartzman pulling the strings from midfield, the visitors kept closing the gap until forcing an even result that, in hindsight, seems fair given the commitment shown by both squads. Leonel Marín and Galo Troncon, the home side’s youngest players at just 20 and 22 respectively, tried to contain the visitors’ attacking impetus with ratings of 7.1 and 7 respectively, but it was a lost battle against the quality of the opposing scorers.

The final draw reflects an intense match, with no solid defences but plenty of attacking dynamism. Sociedad Parque Centenario are left at home with the feeling of two points dropped, while El Fortín de Villa Lugano return to Villa Lugano satisfied to have rescued a result that could have gone against them. In these provincial competitions, these are the matches that make the difference in the title race.
