Match report

Villa Urquiza did not come to speculate. From the first half, they set a tempo that Villa Soldati could not sustain, and the three goals they shipped in Soldati reflected that difference in approach more than in fortune. The home side tried to compete with an organised shape but without the spark needed to unsettle an away defence that, although young in some cases, showed solidity. The final 3-1 is not misleading: it was a comfortable win for the Villa Urquiza side, who found the spaces they were looking for and made the most of them without any drama.

Maxi Aizaga was the team’s attacking flow for the visitors. The 27-year-old left-back scored a goal and provided an assist, acting as a catalyst in a side that knew how to move in quick transitions. Fede Kowalczyk in the Villa Urquiza goal had little work to do because his team-mates controlled the tempo well; Nicolás Branca in central midfield regulated the action without needing to go to the limit, although he picked up a yellow card. For the home side, Nahuel Sotelo, the 16-year-old youngster who arrived at Villa Soldati after being spotted on a local pitch, scored the consolation goal. The forward had no consistent chances, but took the one clear opening he had. Claudio Zanardi, the veteran centre-back of 34 who knows every corner of south-zone football, tried to be a factor in marking but was eventually overrun by the opposition’s display.

What left Villa Soldati uneasy was their passivity in the second half. It was not that Villa Urquiza swept them aside with stylish football, but rather that the home side faded after the break. Tadeo Calabretta, the 37-year-old midfielder who still keeps worn-out boots in his bag, had plenty of time to orchestrate things without pressure. Villa Soldati need to review not only their defence but also the competitive steel they lacked when the match called for a response.
