Match report

Círculo Parque Avellaneda came to Riachuelo, played with balance and took a victory that left no room for doubt. Two goals on the final scoreboard and no response from the home side: that is how decisive the 2-0 was that the visitors secured on matchday 11 of Primera I de GBA Sur. Estrella Villa Riachuelo set up in a conventional 4-4-2, with balanced mentality, but something was missing in the execution. Yoel Vicente, a nineteen-year-old forward born in Comodoro Rivadavia, opened the scoring with a goal that exposed the cracks in the home defence. Later on, Sebastián Rodríguez put the matter to bed with another goal that ended any chance of a comeback.

The shape of the match was symmetrical on paper: both teams with identical formations, the same 4-4-2, the same inclination towards balance. But on the pitch, something else happened. Sandro De Angelis, the 25-year-old goalkeeper from Rosario with a 7.6 rating, barely had to do anything extraordinary; Círculo’s defence functioned with precision. Julián González in the centre of the back line was a wall, while Lucas Zapata, the left-back who has already spent thirty-one years in the game, held his flank without allowing any breakthroughs. Pepe Aguilar from Estrella’s midfield tried to impose some order, but his thirty-two years and a 6.7 rating proved insufficient. Cayetano Núñez, a right-sided midfielder of only twenty-two, failed to inject any dynamism into the build-up. Mati Aizpún in defence did what he could at the age of twenty-three, but it was like trying to hold back a flood with a sandbank.

The result reflects a difference in approach more than in circumstances. Círculo made the most of their chances with efficiency, while Estrella lacked attacking clarity. For the visitors, a victory that keeps them in the running; for the home side, an evening to analyse where the defensive lines broke down and why the midfield could not turn its balance into anything more than good intentions.
