Veteranos de Saavedra earned a deserved win on matchday 5 of Primera I del GBA Oeste, beating Nueva Estrella Floresta 2-1 in a match where both teams set up in similar systems, but the home side knew how to control the key moments. It was a tight encounter, with little space, where finishing ultimately proved decisive. The hosts took their chances; the visitors were left frustrated at having created opportunities without being able to convert them as they deserved.
Walter Gordillo opened the scoring for Saavedra with a goal that finally broke the deadlock in what had been a scrappy match. The 22-year-old forward, rated 7.2, found the net while Estrella Floresta were still searching for their attacking rhythm. Tincho Rosati, the 20-year-old midfielder who joined from Resistencia a few years ago, doubled the lead with a goal that seemed to settle the match. But Loly Olmedo, the 24-year-old visiting centre-back, headed home to revive Floresta's hopes and create tension in the closing minutes. Olmedo, rated 7.2, had a good game in defence as well as contributing in attack, something unusual for a centre-back but which the Chaco-born player has made a natural part of his game.
Mauricio Naranjo was key to the home side's defensive solidity, providing an assist in the build-up from the back. Pedro Jimenez, the 33-year-old full-back with an extensive career, fulfilled his role without fuss, although he picked up a yellow card that will need monitoring. Nueva Estrella Floresta had a playmaker in 29-year-old winger Cataldo Rosati, who assisted Olmedo's goal, but it was not enough to overturn a result that had already been written. Saavedra can breathe easier in the table; despite the defeat, Estrella Floresta showed enough to keep competing in the tournament.
