Match report

Central de Saavedra El Barrio came out on top 2-1 against Club Paternal in a match where the home side were better at managing the key moments. Both teams arrived with similar setups, a balanced 4-4-2, which promised a tight fixture and that is how it turned out. The difference was not in the tactical approach but in Saavedra's ability to finish at the right moments. Maxi Gaitán, the 23-year-old central midfielder brought up at Merlo, like so many others who come to these clubs from the far-flung outskirts, opened the scoring with a goal that allowed the home side to take emotional control. Then Uriel Pizarro, the Catamarca-born centre-back, 29, who arrived at the club almost by chance, made it 2-0 with a goal that seemed to settle the story. Pizarro, the son of a mechanic, has that virtue of players brought up the hard way: he does not buckle, not even when things go against him.

Club Paternal pulled one back before the end through Manu Bertoletti, a young striker of just 20 who tried to rattle the visitors when the match already looked to be heading one way. The youngster struck hard when he could, but he arrived too late. Emanuel Riquelme in the home goalkeeper's net had a quiet match, rating 7.4, with no especially difficult tests. Santino Ruiz at left-back did his job in containing and pushing on, rating 7.7, reminding us that these full-backs from working-class areas of Buenos Aires are often the teams' invisible workers. José Rastelli, the veteran centre-back, 33, with a battle scar, was a wall when needed.

For Paternal it was a frustrating trip to Greater Buenos Aires. The away side stood up to the task but lacked the finishing touch that decides tight matches. Bertoletti was left wondering what might have happened if the ball had gone in earlier. Central de Saavedra, meanwhile, pick up three valuable points on matchday 14 with the solidity of a side that knows how to win when the opposition bites back, without shocks or heavy wins to distract from the daily work.
