Sportivo Belgrano R Norte0 - 2Atlético Villa Devoto FC

Atlético Villa Devoto FC left Belgrano with their pockets full. Sportivo Belgrano R Norte could not stop an away side that arrived with a clear game plan and knew how to carry it out without too many scares. The 0-2 in matchday 17 of the Primera L de CABA was a comfortable win for the men led by their manager, who handled the tempo of the match with ease. Both set-ups were similar: four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards, all very balanced tactically. But the execution made the difference on this afternoon when Belgrano R Norte did not show the authority demanded by playing at home.

The home side tried to press high with Gabi Castelo on the left, the 22-year-old Mendoza winger looking for openings down his flank. Olivier Pessina, from midfield, tried to contain the play, although in the 30th minute he picked up a yellow card that left him condemned to more cautious movement. Kiki Arrarte, the 18-year-old Salta centre-back, looked stranded in defence: his years still do not give him the composure needed at this level. Belgrano R Norte could not string together three passes in a row without Villa Devoto cutting out the circulation.

The visitors, meanwhile, were finding space. Ian Balerdi, the 27-year-old right winger who arrived at Villa Devoto almost by chance years ago from the youth ranks of the west, was appearing dangerously down his side. Javier Brassi, the 28-year-old midfielder born in Comodistribución and raised in the brand’s discipline, was bringing order to midfield. And up front, Pichu Vigevani, the 26-year-old Mendoza striker who was scoring with both feet by the age of seventeen, was hovering around the box with appetite. Brassi made it 0-1 at some point in the first half, breaking the home side’s resistance.

In the second half, Villa Devoto managed the game. Benjamín López, the 30-year-old left-back who has seen far too many battles, was shutting down his side without a crack. Giuliano Biagioli, the Brazilian goalkeeper who grew up among cables and spaces in Porto Alegre, hardly had any real work to do. Pichu Vigevani popped up again for the second goal, crowning a day when Belgrano R Norte could not find any answers. The home side shuffled the pack and looked for attacking options, but the visitors were mentally off the pitch, simply waiting to earn the three points.

Villa Devoto took the win without firing a shot. It was not an exciting match and it did not call for heroics: it was the story of an away side that came to get what it wanted and found it without major complications. Belgrano R Norte remain in debt to their supporters. Matchday 17 will be remembered for what did not happen in Belgrano: nothing important.
