Match report
El Porvenir de San Telmo took a deserved win in Montserrat, with a victory that had the weight of experience and efficiency. Bastian Branca, the thirty-four-year-old striker who arrived at San Telmo almost by chance years ago, finished the only goal of the match. Pibes Montserrat, with their balanced set-up of four defenders and four midfielders, could not solve a fixture that slipped away from them without drama, but also without too many chances created. The away side controlled the necessary tempo and gave almost nothing away at the back.
Kiki Marichal was the most incisive midfielder on the pitch, moving the play from the left with the ease of someone who has a rating of 7.7 and knows where he needs to be. Ignacio Vassallo, a full-back of just eighteen years newly arrived at San Telmo, provided the assist for the goal, showing that there was clarity in the away side’s defensive area. In the home goal, Mati Sgarbi barely had any work to do; in the visitors’ goal, Misael Vallejo dealt with things without being troubled, organising his defence well. Pibes’ full-backs, with Genaro Giménez on the right, failed to create enough danger to punish an away side that came to play for time and managed it. Enrique Karam, the central midfielder aged thirty-two who has a long career behind him, fell short in his attacking support.
The result exposes something uncomfortable for the home side: with two identical formations and similar mentalities, the side with the clearest judgement in defence and the necessary opportunism in attack won. San Telmo were not superior overall, but they were more precise where it mattered. Montserrat wasted home advantage without it sounding like a frustrating rout; they simply were not sharp enough. El Porvenir take the three points away from home and confirm that in this division, tactical discipline often beats eye-catching football.
