Match report
Deportivo Caballito Veteranos and Patriotas Pompeya shared the points on an opening matchday that left more questions than answers. The goalless draw at the home ground was the reflection of two teams that neutralised each other, both opting for caution with 4-4-2 formations and balanced mindsets. There were no spaces, no inspiration. Just a match where both sides seemed content not to lose rather than daring to win.
Caballito's defence had in Galo Schulz a centre-back of just 23 years old who carried out his task without any alarms, staying firm in the aerial duels and the visitors' attacking approaches. In the Pompeya side, the full-backs were the most exposed: Marcelo Álvarez on the right and Silvio Marchetti on the left saw yellow cards during the match, a sign that both had to resort to physicality to stop the home side's attempts. Marchetti, with his 36 years and the experience of a whole career behind him, showed why he remains a respectable defender despite the years. Álvarez, still young at 23 springs, showed that he still has a way to go in terms of defensive precision.
The 0-0 result will satisfy anyone who sees the glass as half full, but it also raises doubts about the attacking potential of both squads. Caballito failed to make the most of home advantage to impose a rhythm, while Pompeya settled for protecting themselves in defence. For matchday 1 of Primera I GBA Norte, a point is better than nothing, but neither team can be pleased with what was on show. The championship has only just begun, and this will be nothing more than a starting point.
