Match report

Defensores de San Cristóbal Oeste and Deportivo Mataderos Veteranos shared the points in a match that had everything: goals, movement and two sides determined not to give ground easily. The final 2-2 fairly well reflects what happened on the pitch in the south of Greater Buenos Aires, where both teams came in with balanced plans and the intention of taking all three points. Misael Beizama opened the scoring for the hosts, and it seemed San Cristóbal Oeste were steering the match in their favour, but Mataderos Veteranos refused to give in: Nicolás Arcuri levelled it with a goal from right-back, a position from which he can be dangerous at the eighteen years old he is.

The story repeated itself in the second half. Salvador Valenzano, the Merlo centre-back who plays without fuss in the box, made it 2-1 for the home side and it looked as though the match was closing out. But once again Mataderos found a way: Liam Arazandi, another eighteen-year-old youngster who came to professional football almost by chance, scored the decisive equaliser. Both of Merlo's goals came from young players, with a 7.2 rating, which says the away side has academy and the ability to respond to adversity, although it also exposes a degree of defensive frailty that San Cristóbal Oeste did not quite manage to exploit. Edgardo Flores, with his thirty-five years and more than a decade at the club, ran the middle of the park with the calm of someone who has seen it all.

The point suits both sides in the south, although neither can be fully satisfied. San Cristóbal Oeste were left with the feeling of a victory that slipped through their fingers; Mataderos Veteranos, meanwhile, showed that with the right attitude they can compete against anyone, even when rivals put them under pressure. Both continue adding points in Primera I, though with that bitter taste that draws leave when a win could have been there.
